The Complete Guide to Black Granite Monuments

Everything monument dealers need to know about black granite varieties, their quarry origins, quality differences, and why black granite dominates the monument market.

Black granite is the dominant material in the American monument industry, accounting for the majority of all granite monuments sold in the United States. Understanding the differences between black granite varieties — where they come from, how they differ in quality, and what drives their pricing — is essential knowledge for any serious monument dealer.

The term "black granite" is used loosely in the industry. True black granites are igneous rocks composed primarily of dark minerals — pyroxene, amphibole, biotite — with very little or no quartz or feldspar content. Petrographically, some "black granites" are actually gabbros, diabases, or other dark igneous rocks, not true granites. However, in the monument trade, the term is used commercially for any fine-grained, very dark stone that takes a polish.

Supreme Black (also marketed as Absolute Black, Galaxy Black, Black Galaxy, or India Black, depending on the variety and supplier) comes from quarries in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, India. This is the most widely sold black granite in the American monument market. At its best, Supreme Black has an extremely fine, uniform grain with no visible crystalline structure, producing a deep mirror polish that is unmatched by any other commercially available granite. Galaxy Black is a specific variety with small, bright mineral inclusions that sparkle under light — popular for a premium visual effect. Quality varies significantly between quarries and even between blocks from the same quarry. The best India Black is sourced from deeper, more consistent quarry faces and shows no brown or gray toning in the polished surface.

African Black (Zimbabwe Black, Nero Africa, or Royal Black) comes from Zimbabwe and parts of South Africa. Zimbabwe Black is a true gabbro, extremely hard and dense, with a characteristically fine, silky grain and a very deep, uniform black color. Many industry professionals consider Zimbabwe Black to be the highest-quality black monument stone in the world, with superior color consistency and a polish that maintains its depth even after decades of weathering. It is priced higher than India Black accordingly.

Chinese Black is imported from quarries in Shanxi and Hebei provinces in China. Shanxi Black (also called China Black or Mongol Black) is a common and affordable option. Quality varies considerably — the best Chinese Black is competitive with mid-grade India Black, while lower-grade material may show brownish tones or an uneven polish. Pricing is typically below India Black.

Brazilian Black (Preto São Gabriel) comes from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It has a coarser grain than India Black with visible light-colored mineral inclusions, giving it a somewhat different aesthetic. Some families prefer the slightly varied appearance, which reads as more natural or aged compared to the uniform black of India or Zimbabwe granite.

When purchasing black granite wholesale, always ask for a sample slab before committing to a large order. Color consistency between blocks can vary significantly with India Black and Chinese Black in particular. The sample should show the finished polished face in good lighting — any brownish tinge, gray cast, or surface pitting that is visible in a sample will be visible (and more noticeable) in a finished monument. Specifying "top grade" or "premium grade" with your supplier and understanding what their quality grading system means in practice protects your orders.
