Blue Pearl Granite: The Dealer's Guide

Everything dealers need to know about Blue Pearl granite — its Norwegian quarry origin, unique iridescent appearance, availability, and how to sell it effectively.

Blue Pearl is one of the most visually distinctive granites used in the monument industry, and understanding its unique characteristics helps you sell it effectively and set appropriate client expectations.

Blue Pearl is quarried exclusively in Larvik, Norway, in a region that produces a specific rock type called larvikite — a coarse-grained syenite with exceptional optical properties. The stone's hallmark is its "schiller" effect: the feldspar crystals within the stone reflect light at various angles, producing an iridescent, shifting blue-silver-gray shimmer that is unlike any other granite. This optical effect, caused by light interference within the labradorite feldspar crystals, is most dramatic when viewed under direct sunlight or bright artificial lighting. The stone changes character dramatically depending on lighting conditions, appearing deep silver-blue in some lights and brighter, more electric blue in others.

Blue Pearl comes in several quality grades and variants. "Classic" Blue Pearl has a medium-coarse grain with consistent color across the slab. "Golden Blue" or "Blue Pearl GT" (GT stands for gold tone) has a warmer color cast with more golden reflections mixed into the blue-silver shimmer. "Extra Dark" Blue Pearl has a deeper base color with a more dramatic contrast between the dark matrix and the iridescent crystals. The quality grade affects pricing significantly — specifying the grade when ordering ensures you receive consistent material.

Blue Pearl is consistently one of the most requested monument granites among families seeking something other than traditional black. Its association with elegance, uniqueness, and distinctive visual presence makes it particularly appealing to families who want a memorable stone. It sells well for both uprights and flat markers.

Lettering on Blue Pearl requires consideration. Sandblasted lettering on Blue Pearl produces good contrast on the darker variants, but on lighter or more varied slabs, the contrast can be less dramatic than on black granite. Paint-filling sandblasted letters in white or gold can improve readability significantly and is worth discussing with families. Laser engraving on Blue Pearl also works well for detailed artwork.

Pricing for Blue Pearl is higher than India Black due to the limited quarry source in Norway and shipping costs from Scandinavia. Blue Pearl is not as widely available as black granite, and inventory can fluctuate based on Norwegian quarry production and shipping logistics. When a family selects Blue Pearl, confirm current availability with your supplier before committing to a delivery timeline. In general, Blue Pearl is an excellent upsell from standard black granite and commands a premium that most families understand and accept given the stone's unique appearance.
